This policy explains how Nihongo (by Estate One Company Limited) uses cookies and similar storage. Nihongo is a local-first app: we use the minimum storage needed to run, no third-party advertising cookies, and we do not sell or share your personal information. Manage your choices anytime via Settings → Privacy → Cookie preferences. See also our Privacy Policy.
1What these technologies are
- Cookies — small files a website stores in your browser.
- Local storage / session storage — key-value data the web app keeps in your browser (e.g., your sign-in token, your saved deck, your theme).
- Device storage — on the iOS/Android app we use on-device storage (AsyncStorage / SQLite), not browser cookies.
- SDK identifiers — IDs used by sign-in/payment/diagnostic SDKs.
We refer to all of these together as "cookies & storage" below.
2Categories we use
Strictly necessaryAlways on
Required to run the Service: your sign-in / session token, security & anti-fraud, load balancing, and a record of your consent choices.
Consent: not required — these don't work without them. Legal basis: necessary to provide the Service / our legitimate interest in security.
Functional preferencesOptional
Remember your theme (light/dark), furigana on/off, reading speed, chosen language, and last-read position.
Consent: set only with your permission where your local law requires opt-in.
Analytics & diagnosticsOptional
Crash logs, performance, and aggregated/de-identified usage events that help us fix bugs and improve the app.
Consent: off until you allow it in regions that require opt-in (e.g., EU/UK). Aggregated where possible.
Advertising / marketingNot used
We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not build advertising profiles.
3Third parties that may set storage
When you use certain features, these providers may set their own cookies/identifiers under their policies:
- Supabase — authentication / session storage (necessary when signed in).
- Google — only if you use Google sign-in or text-to-speech.
- Apple — sign-in and in-app payments.
We do not authorize these providers to use your data for their own advertising via the App.
4Managing your choices
- In-app: open Settings → Privacy → Cookie preferences to turn functional and analytics storage on/off, or to withdraw consent — anytime.
- Browser: you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings (some necessary features may then stop working).
- Global Privacy Control (GPC): we treat a valid GPC browser signal as an opt-out of analytics and of any "sale"/"share" (which we don't do anyway).
- Mobile: clear device storage by deleting the app or via your OS settings.
5Regional rules
EU / EEA & UK — ePrivacy + GDPR / UK GDPR
We ask for opt-in consent before setting any non-essential storage. Consent is granular (per category), nothing is pre-ticked, "Reject all" is as easy as "Accept all," and you can withdraw consent anytime. We record your choice and re-ask when it materially changes.
United States — CCPA/CPRA & state laws (CO, CT, VA, UT, TX, OR…)
We provide notice at collection and honor opt-out requests, including Global Privacy Control signals. We do not "sell" and do not "share" your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics. There is a "Your privacy choices" control in the app.
Rest of world
Necessary storage is used to operate the Service everywhere. Functional and analytics storage are used only with consent where your local law requires it (e.g., Brazil LGPD, Canada PIPEDA / Québec Law 25, Australia Privacy Act, South Africa POPIA, and similar).
6Changes
We'll post any update here with a new date and, for material changes, re-request consent where required.
